Bibliographic Databases as Visualized Knowledge-Resource (WG 4)

Project content

Since April 1st, 2013, the joint project by the Chair of Ancient History of the University of Augsburg and the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Berlin has been promoted in the context of the CLARIN-D (http://de.clarin.eu/de) project that aims at the development of a long term web-based infrastructure for the Humanities.

Within the framework of the project, the development of a literary platform for Classical Studies is a primary objective, which will enable users, at the same time, access to the data of the Gnomon Bibliographic Database (http://www.gnomon-online.de) and the ZENON-OPAC of the DAI (http://opac.dainst.org). The consolidation of the amount of data of two important and complementary bibliographic databases will result in a comprehensive data pool that cannot only be used for bibliographic research, but that will also be evaluated with modern computational tools and visualized in an innovative way.

Names of persons and places will be standardized and, where applicable, be linked to other web-based databases (lists of place names, onomastic and biographic lexica etc.). Data enhancement via Linked Data enables topographic (mapping of bibliographic data on maps) and topologic (depiction of knowledge contexts) visualizations. Thereby, the topologies of knowledge, which are contained in the keyword trees of the databases and which are, however, only seldom explicitly taken into account by the users, will be made more visible and productive.

The mentioned goals serve the development of the bibliographic databases involved to a joint information service for Classical Studies of a new quality and kind, since it will merge data pools of different web tools and structure them with the help of the information stored in the bibliographic datasets and keyword thesauri. Moreover, the integration of datasets with philological and archaeological focus will enhance a conscious perception of the respective current state of research in the various disciplines involved in Classical Studies.
