Successful start to CLARIAH-DE

Starting March 1, 2019, the two research infrastructure networks CLARIN-D and DARIAH-DE have begun their cooperation in the joined project CLARIAH-DE. In this joined project, the two established research infrastructures are supposed to get merged over the course of two years (2019-2021). In this fashion, academic endeavours of researchers from the Humanities and Cultural Sciences who work with complex digital tools and special data repositories shall be substantially facilitated. The project is supported by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF) and wants to make a contribution to the further development of the national research infrastructures.

More than 30 participants of the twelve research facilities involved in the project participated in the Kickoff Meeting on April 8-9, 2019, which took place in the Leibniz Institute for the German Language (Leibniz-Institut für Deutsche Sprache) in Mannheim. The first day of the meeting was spent on a discussion among the researchers about the first results and the current state of operations in the project. Afterwards, the perspectives of CLARIAH-DE in the scope of the initiative for the National Research Data Infrastructure and the incorporation into the European context for the development of research infrastructures for the Humanities were intensely debated. On the following day, the different sections of the project met in their respective work groups. These sections focus on the harmonisation of research data and the used standards, the merging of services, the development of services for a joined promotion of young researchers, and the integration of CLARIN-D’s and DARIAH-DE’s different services for outreach.

CLARIN-D and DARIAH-DE are connected through their interest in the digital investigation of textual and linguistic sources from the perspective of the Humanities and Cultural Sciences. Both networks have been specialised on particular research areas for about a decade. The aim of CLARIN-D is the establishment of a network of centres intimately entwined with particular disciplines, which shall then serve as a backbone of a research infrastructure specifically for researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The different disciplines cover a wide array of the Humanities for which linguistic resources play a major role in research. DARIAH-DE, on the other hand, supports research working with digital methods and procedures in the Humanities and Cultural Sciences with a broad research infrastructure consisting of the four pillars teaching, research, research data and technical components. The network was financed by the BMBF from 2011-2019 and has been supported through the self-funding of 16 partners in an operational cooperation since March 2019.

The merging of the two networks’ infrastructures into CLARIAH-DE is an important milestone on the way to a shared space for the cooperative, digitally supported research in the Humanities and the Cultural and Social Sciences in Germany and Europe.

CLARIAH-DE is coordinated and accompanied content-wise by the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen and the Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen.

Involved as partners are, additionally, the Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur Mainz, the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, the Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen, the Herzog August Bibliothek Wolfenbüttel, the Institut für Deutsche Sprache Mannheim, the Hamburger Zentrum für Sprachkorpora, the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, the Technische Universität Darmstadt, the Universität Leipzig and the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg as well as all the institutions participating in the networks CLARIN-D and DARIAH-DE.
