CLARIN-D for Other Philologies

CLARIN-D supports research in foreign languages by providing services for exploring non-German language data, analysing written and spoken texts, and archiving corpora and research results. The Working Group 2 »Other Philologies« is a network of scholars of foreign languages within CLARIN-D whose aim is to support foreign philologies through digital research infrastructures.

Here you can find more information about the Working Group "Other Philologies" (flyer).

Data for Research

The Virtual Language Observatory (VLO) provides access to a huge amount of resources for research like Text-corpora in English or Polish.

A dedicated full text search, the Federated Content Search (FCS) of CLARIN-D, allows researchers to search the full text of many resources of the CLARIN community. This way, it is possible to find examples for the usage of certain terms, for instance. References and source documents found in this way can be extracted and saved as a corpus for further analysis.

Software Tools for Research Projects

CLARIN-D provides software and web services for the analysis and preparation of language data. This includes WebAnno for the manual and semi-automatic annotation of texts or WebLicht for automatic annotation of texts with a variety of tools that can be combined according to the needs and preferences of the user. WG2 has designed a manual for the use of WebLicht: "Build your own corpus - with WebLicht".

Providing Your Own Research Data

The CLARIN-D network not only provides tools for the analysis of language data but also offers the possibility to sustainably archive your own research data and make it available to the research community for reuse. By cooperating with a CLARIN centre, the data can be prepared in a way where it is sufficiently described by metadata. One such tool is the CMDI-Maker, which can be used for creating descriptions that allow the research community to easily access the data and results via dedicated search engines.

Would you like to provide your data through the CLARIN-D infrastructure? Contact a specialised centre or the CLARIN-D Helpdesk.

Contacts in the Discipline

Within CLARIN-D, the disciplines are organised into Working Groups (WGs). Researchers of foreign philologies, such as English studies, Romance studies, Slavic studies and researchers from linguistics, literature and cultural studies are represented in WG2 »Other Philologies«.

All foreign philologies at German universities are immensely involved with the digitalisation of research, but the ways of involvement differ depending on the subject. Traditions in research and teaching with digital resources vary between the subjects. Commercial providers of digital language resources are more prominent in English studies than in Romance or Slavic studies. Furthermore, within a subject, access to digital resources differs depending on the sub area. In linguistics, regardless of the subject, there is more experience and affinity to work with digital resources – especially in the form of corpus linguistics (the description of language structure and use based on digital corpora) – than in literature and cultural studies, where there is less common ground.

The working group aims to formulate the needs of the individual subjects and sub areas with regard to the development and provision of digital language resources and analysis tools. Furthermore, the WG supports the planning and initiation of so-called "curation projects", in which relevant resources are incorporated into the CLARIN-D infrastructure.

Currently there are 12 renowned researchers from different areas within English and American Studies, Romance Studies, and Slavic Studies participating in WG2. Most of them work in language and media studies and have long-standing experience with text resources.

Resources from the Discipline for the Discipline

During the implementation phase of CLARIN-D, the WG identified important resources and tools, which have been developed and prepared for reuse. These small projects are called curation projects within CLARIN-D.
